what’s the point of taking the writing(multiple choice) section of the SAT? whenever I look at college admission requirements they only ask for the critical reading and math. was that section for nothing?

That section is not for nothing! For admission requirements the critical reading and math are what stands out; however, once admitted you will be required to take a writing course and then the score on the writing section of the SAT will determine if you have to take remedial writing courses or college level composition I or composition II.

The written part was designed after the LSAT writing section that was incorporated into the Law Test in 1980/1981. The writing will permit any college to evaluate your penmanship and your ability to string two sentences together that convey a clear and single thought. Write and/or print clearly and state your viewpoint in a manner that will illustrate your diplomacy on a topic or subject matter.

It pretty much removes SAT II writing and replaces the old SAT’s analogies section (my instructor of sorts told me that the head of collegeboard or something thought the analogies section was bogus, so…). Some schools may not have updated everything because it’s a new thing.
Edit: Depending on where you go, the writing portion can make it so you don’t need to take placement exams. For example, the UC system requires ~ 690 pts on the written portion so you don’t need to take the writing test. Pretty much the same as what the previous poster said.

Admissions offices are just starting to adapt their requirements to the new SAT. I know some schools required the writing section of the SAT II, but maybe this new section replaces that requirement.

It is a new thing that some colleges and universities are requiring it. I just read that on the collegeboard.com web site. You have to click on the school you plan to attend and see if they are requiring it or waiving it.
