Sparknotes has a decent SAT section on their site, and the CollegeBoard website is also relatively helpful. What I would really suggest is going to a bookstore and shelling out $30 for a good SAT prep book – Barron, Princeton Review, Kaplan and CollegeBoard are all good books. Most of these books contain a couple practice tests with real SAT-style questions so you can see what you need to work on, as well as sections to help you hone your score and learn how to do best on the test. The books aren’t extremely cheap, but it’s definitely worth it considering how much colleges consider the SAT.

How To Choose Colleges in Todayâ??s Economy:

The admissions and financial aid process from the perspective of a retired Guidance Counselor and a parent of four children. I spent 34 years in education with the last 22 years as a high school guidance counselor. I specialized in admissions and financial aid as two of my key assets as a counselor. I visited many colleges up and down the east coast and networked with many admissions/financial aid counselors in order to better service my counselees and their parents. I have successfully put three (3) of my children through college but I did this in an economy that was flourishing. In todayâ??s economy with our assets and investments down anywhere from 30% to 50%, it makes this process a lot more difficult. College admissions have become more competitive and more expensive since my last child graduated from college in 1998. My first two daughters graduated from college in early 90â??s and the admissions and cost was very reasonable during that period.

In general, for those of you that are planning to send your sons and daughters to college in the next 2 to 5 years, you should begin to do your preliminary research right now. For those of you who will be sending your son or daughter to college in the next 2 years, you should have done your preliminary research and your financial planning already. Right now, you and your son or daughter should be visiting colleges, taking the PSATâ??s and SATâ??S in the junior year. The mindset and training begins a lot earlier than I have just mentioned. Financial planning also should be started as early as possible. Your sons and daughters will most likely get into 3 to 10 colleges/universities, depending on the number of schools that they apply to. Admissions will be based on what kind of profile that your son or daughter creates during high school and this will also effect what kind of financial aid package he or she is going to receive. After everything is done, what it comes down to is where can you afford to send your son or daughter. It comes down to money and the decision will be made between April 15th and May 1st of your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s senior year.

Now, I will get in to the specifics of college admissions and financial aid. I will also give you links to websites where you can get more information.

Â

Admissions to colleges are based on your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s transcript, class rank, SAT scores, school activities/sports and letters of recommendation from teachers and his or her counselor (grades and activities from grades 9 to 12 are considered for the purposes of applying to college). The studentâ??s work habit is established early in years. Once your son or daughter enters high school, everything that he or she does will become part of his or her profile. For admissions you need to go to www.collegeboard.com/csearch to become familiar with PSATâ??s, SATâ??s, plan for college, find colleges, apply to colleges and pay for college.Â

Once you have your sonâ??s and daughterâ??s GPA, class rank and PSATâ??s or SAT scores, you should go to the collegeâ??s and universityâ??s website to see what the previous freshman classâ??s profile was to see how your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s profile compare. This will give you an idea of what kind of chances he or she will have when he or she apply. There many websites out there that you can use to do your research and your best resource is your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s guidance counselor.

You should work closely with your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s high schoolâ??s guidance office. Also, you can always call the collegeâ??s admissions office to get information specific to that college.

When your son or daughter does apply to college, he or she should apply to at leas 5 schools. You want he or she to apply to at least (1) one school that you have a real good feeling that he or she will get in and that you can afford. Your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s safety school is extremely important on your list of schools. He or she should also apply to at least (1) one reach school. The rest of the schools should be within his or her profile.

Â

Financial aid or financing your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s college education, is to me, the most important part of this whole college search process. Because it doesnâ??t matter where and how many schools that your son or daughter get into, if you canâ??t afford to send him or her to one of those schools. You need to apply to schools in variety of price ranges. You should from the beginning, apply to at least (1) one school that you know based on your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), that you can afford that particular school with little financial help or no help at all (your financial safety school). The following websites will help you determine your EFC:Â www.fafsa4caster.ed.gov/

Your EFC is calculated when you file your financial aid forms (FAFSA and CSS Profile). In most cases, you only have to file the FAFSA, which is the federal form, and it is income driven. You should calculate your Expected Family Contribution as soon as possible so you can realistically do your college searches. You want to know how much the schools are going to expect you to come with financially and it always is more than what you think.

I hope that the information that I have given you is helpful in your college search adventure. For more information, please contact your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s guidance counselor.

If financing your sonâ??s or daughterâ??s education is a concern in todayâ??s economy and you are willing to investigate how you can pay for you childâ??s education with easy. You could possibly have your son or daughter come out of college debt-free. I will provide you with more free information on my website which will give you more details on how you can make a second stream of income in a risk-free and recession-proof business opportunity. We donâ??t sell anything or make anything. We are the new millennium middlemen.

Good luck and God bless! I will not ill advise you. I was in the helping profession for 34 years and I have been blessed again with an opportunity to continue to help people but this time it is financial in nature.

How to Prepare for College While In High School Many different factors go into the reasons students are accepted in different schools. Most of these factors have a lot to do with the student’s GPA in high school, extracurricular activities such as honors societies and such, as well as what classes the student had been taking in high school. It is very important that the new high school student begin thinking about college in their first year. In addition, there are counselors available for students to speak with every day at the school and should utilize this benefit whenever necessary in order to help make decisions. Once a student begins focusing on getting into a good college, they will also have the opportunity to apply for scholarships and more later on down the road. Most colleges require before admission that a student has taken either both the SAT and ACT or both exams. Each college can be different in their admission requirements so it would be a good idea to contact the school directly. In regards to score requirements, each school can, again, be very different from the other depending on what they value at the school. In order to do a better job on the SAT and ACT exams, it would be a good idea to begin preparing for these earlier on and even preparing for the PSAT exam to be taken earlier on such as in their junior year of high school in order to see where they stand on the exams and what needs improvement. Students can usually take the PSAT exam around the 2nd year in high school and they should speak with the school counselor in order to find out more about registering for it. In addition, possibly get more information about the actual SAT and ACT exams from the counselor as well in order to prepare for those as well. There are many ways to prepare for all of the college admission exams. Some of the most effective ways to prepare for the SAT or ACT exam would be: Reading books, magazines, newspapers, even trade journals. Take the SAT and ACT prep courses. Also there is SAT and ACT prep software available as well. Take the practice exams available as well as the PSAT. Take more difficult and/or challenging courses in high school. It all matters. Keep a regular study schedule. Study more and study often. Work with the student that experiences test anxiety. This barrier is something that will have to be worked with as in college there is a lot of public speaking for many students as well as heavier deadlines and exams. During the senior year students and parents should begin considering financial assistance as well as the actual application processes for all selected colleges. Some of the best ways to start would be to contact the college(s) directly to get good, reliable information.

If you’ve heard of the SAT exam then it is likely that you’ve also heard of the PSAT exam. Many students choose to take this exam as a form of preparation for the SAT within the same school year, or possibly in the following year. If you’ve never heard of the PSAT, or are just curious about what it is, take a few moments to learn more about it and how it can help you prepare for the SAT.
What is the PSAT?
The PSAT is also known as the Preliminary SAT or National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It is co-sponsored by the College Board and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Students in high school have probably already heard about the test in their freshman year, as many schools begin to prepare them for it so that it can be taken in the sophomore year.
The main objective of this test is to give students an idea of what to expect on their SAT exam. It gives them an opportunity to take all of the steps involved in the actual test (testing on the same sections and being timed) without suffering any true penalties. The test is free and offers a great building block to the SAT that is usually taken in the junior or senior year. So students who want get some of the SAT test jitters out of their system can benefit well from taking the PSAT.
How Does the PSAT Help Prepare for the SAT?
As mentioned previously, the biggest way that taking the PSAT helps to prepare for the SAT is that they are virtually identical tests. The PSAT has the same types of sections, including critical reading, math, and writing skills, and all questions are multiple choice. This works out well in giving students a clear idea of what the real experience will feel like.
In preparing to take the PSAT, it’s not much different than preparing for the actual SAT exam. However, it’s not uncommon for schools to make preparation a part of the school curriculum since it is tied with the National Merit Scholarship. With training in the classroom setting to prepare for the PSAT, you can take some of this knowledge with you as you sit down and prepare for the real exam in the following semester or year. To learn when the PSAT is available in your area, visit the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s website.
Getting Additional SAT Help
It’s great to know that the PSAT is an excellent tool for SAT preparation; however, it’s not the actual SAT test. In other words, it’s still a good idea to get specialized help to prepare for the actual exam. This help can come in the form of study groups or SAT preparation courses offered locally. Also, students are finding that online SAT preparation courses are equally capable of preparing them efficient – and with these online courses comes the convenience of preparing from home.
There’s no doubt that the PSAT is a great exam to take if you’re serious about eventually taking the SAT. So before diving into the big test, it doesn’t hurt to consider how you can benefit from this useful preparatory test.

Starting in high school the counselors, teachers and parents all start using acronyms. Now life is difficult enough and now everyone is throwing all these initials around expecting you to not only know what they mean, but to score well on them. Well never, fear, there are many college bound students in the same boat as you that are wondering what the heck a PSAT really is. Seriously, you should know what these initials are by now, but you still may not have a good grasp on what it really involves. This article will serve as a guideline and help you better understand this test that you are headed toward.
PSAT or Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test
The PSAT is kind of a practice test that helps students determine their placement and how much preparation they need before they take on the SAT. This can give you a good idea of how the questions are worded, what is expected and if the test is easy or difficult for you. Some students make the mistake of believing that because they aced the PSAT that the SAT will be the same and never even study. That is not advisable and it may be that you got lucky with the PSAT. So always, make sure that you prepare before any exam, unless you just have money and early mornings to blow!
The PSAT is made up of two reading sessions, two math sessions and one writing session. The questions are multiple choice or guess, as many prefer to say except for the writing portion of the test. The allotted time for the test is a little over two hours, but not everyone takes that long and others need the entire time. Two hours is not the maximum given, but only a guideline.
The reading sessions are approximately twenty-five minutes apiece and involves critical reading, vocabulary as well as determining the relationship between words. The most important part of the reading section of the PSAT is to ensure that you read the sections carefully. There are fifty questions in the reading section so it is important to adhere to a time schedule. Hurrying through this part of the exam will lower your score, because there might be a trick or two! Pace yourself to ensure that you are not carelessly answering the questions, but that you are not taking too much time either. Those taking the PSAT today will not have those all famous analogies to look forward to as they have been eliminated, darned of luck!
The math sessions are approximately twenty-five minutes apiece and consist of word problems, algebra, graphs, geometry and statistics. The match section consists of thirty multiple-choice questions and ten grid questions. Performance on the math section can be enhanced greatly with practicing and brushing up on math skills with a good PSAT preparation guide.
The writing section of the PSAT involves a thirty-minute allotment where the test taker is expected to answer questions based on a given writing sample. The student will answer multiple choice questions based on finding mistakes, poor sentence structure and other grammatical errors. The best way to prepare for the writing section of the PSAT is to practice with the given exercises in the PSAT study guide. There are thirty-nine questions that must be answered in thirty minutes in the writing section. Warning: many first time students fail the writing portion of the exam because they blow this section off.
A perfect score on the PSAT is eighty and the lowest is a twenty. Most students that are still in high school that take the exam score about a fifty. This could be greatly improved if the students made use of reference material. The mind gets better with practice and certainly over time, so it is imperative to study for the PSAT and SAT. On the Internet you will see a ton or study guides, courses and tapes that will raise your score. Many of these products will, but you need to make sure that you are getting a proven product. So, how do you know if it is proven or not. Look at the testimonials of other students, if there are no testimonials, avoid making the purchase. If others have benefited from the product than it is safe to assume that you can do the same.
Most high schools begin trying to get their junior and senior classes to take the PSAT. This is a great time to take the test to begin preparing in the areas that you need help in or scored poorly. If you start preparing early you can eliminate some of the stress and possibly even get more of an opportunity for financial aid and/or scholarship money. The quicker you have the SAT results the more likely you are to be granted money, that you don’t have to pay back. So, do not wait or put off taking the PSAT, consider it a practice and preparation for the SAT.
There are also several practice tests on the Internet, but are not all that you will need to prepare for the PSAT or SAT. Granted the free practice tests can give you an idea of the test type questions, but it is not a good preparation strategy. Do not fall into the “cannot afford it trap”, find a way because the test is not cheap and you do not want to waste the money failing the test!
