Do Many Colleges Still Require The Sat Subject Tests Or Do Act Test Scores Suffice?

I have to help line up some tests for my son, so I was wondering whether students still take the SAT subject tests? Do they still have to take three tests or do schools require fewer tests? What tests are usually required? Can students substitute the ACT test?
